I discovered the Orange County Great Park when a friend told me about "the big orange balloon." That big orange balloon is actually a helium balloon called the Great Park Balloon, that takes you up 400 ft in the air, for a birds-eye-view of the Great Park. That weekend, there were some high winds, so it took me several tries to get on a flight, and the Great Park Balloon was pretty much the only attraction at the park.

Still, I was charmed by the story of the Great Park: a former marine training base turned environmentally-sustainable "growing park" bigger than New York City's Central park -- right here in Orange County, California.

From my first visit, the Great Park became one of my favorite parks in Orange County. Now the Great Park is nearing the completion of phase one development and has added a carousel, an arts pavilion, a playground and sports complex to its growing list of amenities. But I think my favorite will always be the Great Park Balloon.

There's always something happening at the Great Park, especially on weekends. But if you're looking for something both romantic and family friendly to do this weekend, the Great Park Balloon is a good way to go.
