This Friday the United Food and Commercial Workers Union issued an announcement that after months of negotiation, they were cancelling the workers' contract with the major grocers, Ralph's, Von's and Albertson's. It should be noted that while this action is the first step toward preparing workers to go on strike, this does not mean a strike is impending.

While I'd like for UFCW workers to get a fair deal from their employers, I think its important for us as consumers to be aware of what our options are with regard to buying groceries. There was a time when the Big Three seemed like the only choices. Now there are lots of alternatives to the big regional grocery chains, options you might find provide higher quality goods at a more affordable cost.

My recommendation is to shop local as much as possible. Who knows, as you explore the food options a little more, you might discover that the grocery experience can become a bigger part of the joy of eating and cooking.
