Explore the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and Ecological Reserve

In 1899 the Bolsa Chica Gun Club was established and built a two story structure on the mesa overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This same group was also responsible for damning off the Bolsa Chica mesa tidal flow from the ocean. During World War II, this site became the location for gun emplacements, built on the wetlands to protect the California coast from a potential attack. The bigger of these two bunkers was eventually dismantled. The smaller bunker still stands at the Sacred Cogstone Site, which is restricted to public access.
