Labor Day started as a way to honor the achievments of workers throughout the US. Over the years, Labor Day has become synonymous with end-of-summer family gatherings and big week-end getaways. Here is a list events taking place in the Orange County area this Labor weekend.
Orange International Street Fair
When: Sept 2-3
Where: Orange Circle & Plaza Centre
For nearly 40 years, the city of Orange has celebrated its history with Orange International Street Fair. The OISF has sense evolved into a cultural fair featuring international cuisine, seven stages of live entertainment, artisan vendors and activities for the kids. Admission is free, however, the OISF is also used as a fundraising event for more than 80 non-profit organizations.
Great Labor Day Cruise
When: Sept 2-4
Where: Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa
Don't be fooled by the name, this is not a boat cruise, but rather a three-day spectacle of classic cars. The Great Labor Day Cruise takes place at the Orange County Fairgrounds and includes an opening party at Baja Blues Cafe, live entertainment all weekend, a kiddie corner, a model car contest, car cruising and other car games. General admission is $15; kids 12-and-under get in free. Proceeds from the event are donated to Children's Charities of America. Visit the website for more information.
Oktoberfest
When: Sept 4 - Oct 30
Where: Old World Village, Huntington Beach
This annual celebration of German heritage, promises lots of beer, sausages and live entertainment. On Labor Day weekend Oktoberfest opens with the Sunday Kinderfest -- dubbed “ Oktoberfest for kids” -- and a fundraiser for the Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach. Other activities include weekly Daschund races and beer drinking contests.
End of Summer Skatepark Campout
When: Sept 3-4
Where: Etnies Skatepark, Lake Forrest
The Etnies Skatepark invites skaters of all ages to an end-of-summer bash. This supervised, all-night skating session includes snacks, breakfast, a "Midnight Madness" competition and other activities. Gates lock at 10:00 p.m. on September 3rd and campers aren't allowed to leave until 9:00 a.m., September 4th. Admission is $30 at the gates, on the day of the event. Playground Feastival
When: Sept 3-4
Where: Hidden Valley, Irvine
Nick Cannon hosts this Labor Day weekend music festival that promises to bring a "new music experience to Orange County" with a line up of live musical performances by Panic! at the Disco, The Bravery, Lil John, Shiny Toy Guns, Chiddy Bang, Kid Sister, Del The Funky Homosapian, Game and more. Labor Day Celebration at the Santa Ana Zoo

Where: Santa Ana Zoo
The Orange County Labor Federation is putting on a celebration in honor of its union members, represented in more than 90 Orange County unions. Join local fire fighters, police officers, teachers, waste managers and others Orange County workers, for food and fun at the Santa Ana Zoo.
